SAN DIEGO - San Diego State athletic director Jeff Schemmel announced today the hiring of Don Oberhelman as senior associate athletic director and chief operating officer. He will begin his duties at San Diego State on Feb. 1.
Oberhelman comes to San Diego State from Southern Mississippi, where he served in a variety of roles during the past five years, including most recently as the senior associate athletic director. Among his many duties at Southern Mississippi, Oberhelman oversaw all services as they relate to the student-athlete, including the student-athlete enhancement program, life skills, strength and conditioning and sports medicine. In addition, he was in charge of compliance, student-athlete financial aid, the NCAA certification process and eligibility. He also served as the sport administrator for the men's basketball program.
Oberhelman comes to SDSU with more than a decade of experience, having worked at institutions in the Atlantic Coast Conference, the Big 12 Conference and Conference USA.
"I am thrilled that Don Oberhelman has chosen to become part of the Aztec team," Schemmel said. "I have known Don and respected his great work for some time. His tenures at Florida State, Texas A&M and Southern Mississippi have given him diverse and comprehensive experience in many facets of major college athletic administration, which will benefit San Diego State greatly. In addition, he is a quality person who cares about those around him. We can't wait for him to get started."
Oberhelman began his professional career in athletics at Florida State where he served as a compliance assistant from 1995 to 1998. He then served as the education coordinator at Texas A&M from 1998 to 2002, before departing for Southern Mississippi.
Oberhelman earned his bachelor's degree from Kansas State in 1993 and his master's degree from Florida State in 1996.
