TUCSON, Ariz. - Sophomore defender Millie Allen scored her second goal of the season and the Aztec defense was dominant, as the San Diego State women's soccer team shutout Pac-10 foe Arizona, ranked No. 15 in the West Region,1-0, on Sunday in Tucson, Ariz.

With the victory, SDSU records its fifth shutout of the season and improves its overall record to 4-4-2. The defeat drops Arizona's mark to 5-5-0.

"This was a really big win for our team," head coach Mike Friesen said. "I was really proud of the effort our women gave today after not having their best game on Friday against Arizona State.

"A win like this against a very good Arizona team, which beat then No. 4 Texas earlier this season, will give us a lot of confidence as we head into the second half of the season."

The Aztec defense led by Allen, junior Ali Lokanc and senior Ashley Young frustrated the Wildcats all afternoon allowing only six shots, with only four reaching the net. The four Arizona shots on net were easily saved by freshman goalkeeper Aubree Southwick who registered her fifth shutout of the season, one more than Aztecs tallied all of last season.

Allen stepped up to help out the offense when she scored off a free kick from the left corner outside the penalty box following an Arizona foul on senior Jackie Ragudos who shot from 25 yards out with two and half minutes left before half. Allen tallied the first goal of her career in a similar situation against Cal Poly off a penalty kick.

"I give credit to assistant coach Erica Keus for recommending Millie to take the shot after the foul on Jackie," Friesen said. "Millie is really good in space and got off a great kick."

The win against Arizona ends the season-high four-game road trip on a high a note and gives the Aztecs their first victory against a Pac-10 team since 2005 when SDSU beat Washington, 1-0

The Scarlet and Black return home next weekend for a pair of matches at the SDSU Sports Deck. On Friday, the Aztecs will take on eighth-ranked UCLA at 4 p.m. SDSU will conclude the non-conference portion of its schedule on Sun., Oct. 7, against Cal State Bakersfield at 2:30 p.m.
