RIVERSIDE, Calif. - With its first team set to compete at the Stanford Invitational later in the day, San Diego State sent its `B' squad to race in the UC Riverside Invitational Saturday morning at UCR's Farm Course. SDSU had all six of its runners log personal records in the 5K with four of the six eclipsing their previous PR by more than one minute.
Leading the way for the Aztecs was Sara Cunningham, who finished in 58th place with a time of 18 minutes, 56.10 seconds. Her effort was the top 5K time of the season for San Diego State replacing Lisa Naucler's 19:13.80 performance at the Fullerton Season Opener. Prior to the meet, the Torrance, Calif., native's best 5K performance was 20:44.00 at the Aztec Invitational on Sept. 15.
Michelle Martinez was San Diego State's next fastest athlete of the morning as she clocked in with a time of 19:15.20. Before today, Martinez ran a personal-best 21:04.90 at the Fullerton Season Opener back on Sept. 1.
Elizabeth Leonard posted a top-100 effort after she finished in 98th place when she crossed the finish line in a career-best 19:27.40. Not far behind was Lindsey Barajas, who registered a time of 19:40.50. Leonard surpassed her previous PR of 20:53.00 (2007 Aztec Invite), while Barajas erased her old PR of 19:56.40 accomplished at this same UCR Invitational one year ago.
Sara Beyers logged a time of 19:51.80, a personal record 43 seconds faster than her previous effort of 20:34.40 at the Fullerton Season Opener and Lindsey Deane set a new PR for a second straight meet with a time of 21:41.90.
Overall, the Aztecs finished in 13th place out of 22 teams with 366 points. UC Riverside won the meet with 42 points.
SDSU returns to action Saturday, Oct. 6, at the Triton Classic at UC San Diego at 8:30 a.m. PT.
