SAN DIEGO - Despite a short rain delay in the morning, the San Diego State women's tennis team kicked off its 2007-08 campaign on Friday, completing the first day of action at the SDSU Fall Classic with 10 victories in two flights of singles and one flight of doubles competition. The Aztecs' season-opening tournament featured individual competition and no team scoring.

In Flight 1 singles action, junior Holly Bagshaw was the only Aztec to reach the semifinals. Bagshaw opened the tournament with a 6-3, 6-3 victory over Dominique Karas of Rice before dispatching Denver's Kyla Iwinski, 6-2, 6-4.

Senior Eliska Krausova picked up a convincing first-round victory, defeating Christine Dao of Rice, 6-2, 6-2, but the tables were turned in her second match as Krausova fell to Pepperdine's Anamika Bhargava, 6-0, 6-2.

In her Aztec debut, freshman Julia Trunk cruised to a 6-2, 6-2 victory over Rebecca Lin of Rice, but she wasn't as fortunate in the quarterfinals as Trunk suffered a 6-4, 7-5 setback at the hands of cross-town rival USD's Helene Lindstrand.

Juniors Milana Yusupov and Esther Cadua each suffered a loss in their first singles match of the day, but they both bounced back with victories in the consolation bracket. Yusupov defeated Milou Teeling of USD, 6-2, 6-4, while Cadua cruised to a 6-4, 6-0 victory over Rice's Christine Dao.

Over in Flight 2 singles action, freshman Olivia Colman received a first-round bye before notching her first collegiate victory by defeating Pepperdine's Marigrace Marshall, 6-1, 6-0. Classmate Darby McGill dropped her first-round match, but rebounded in the consolation draw as she recorded a 6-2, 6-2 triumph over Raine Mitchell of Pepperdine.

Sophomore Ozge Atalay fought back from a one-set deficit, but couldn't overcome Rice's Tiffany Lee, falling 6-1, 2-6, 10-3 in her only singles match of the day.

In doubles action, the Aztec tandem of Yusupov and Bagshaw received a first-round bye before defeating Liles and Braverman of Pepperdine, 8-6, to advance to the semifinals.

Cadua and Trunk started the morning off on a high note by blanking Pepperdine's Mitchell and Marshall, 8-0. The Aztec duo of Atalay and Colman were not as fortunate, however, as they suffered an 8-3 setback to Rice's Lee and Lin.

The SDSU Fall Classic resumes Saturday at 9 a.m. PT at the Aztec Tennis Center.
