Sophomore Jamel Wallace (San Diego/Oceanside HS) headed in a shot to the far left corner in the 78th minute to lift the San Diego State men's soccer team to a 1-0 victory over Missouri State in the first game of the UNLV Tournament Friday night in Las Vegas, Nev. It was the third consecutive shutout for Brad Byrns and the Aztecs (3-2-1).

After a scoreless first half which saw SDSU outshoot the Bears (2-4-1), 6-1, freshman Raymundo Reza almost got the Aztecs on the board in the 64th minute when he ripped a shot with the Missouri State goalkeeper out of position. The shot attempt, however, was knocked down by a Bear defender, keeping the game scoreless.

San Diego State finally got on the scoreboard at the 77:11 mark when junior Dennis Sanchez sent a cross to Wallace, who was able to outjump a Missouri State defender and knock the ball into the far left corner for his second goal of the season.

Wallace and sophomore Evan Toft each had three shots to lead the SDSU offense, while Reza and senior Kraig Chiles had two attempts apiece.

Byrns (3-1-1), a redshirt freshman, made four saves to pick up his third straight shutout and lower his goals against average to 0.77.

The Aztecs will continue their play in the UNLV Tournament with a game against Drake at 5 p.m. Saturday.

MAN OF THE MATCH: Sophomore Jamel Wallace earned Man of the Match honors for SDSU after scoring the game-winning goal in the 78th minute. In addition to his second tally of the season, Wallace had a game-high tying three shots.
