SDSU Kicks Off Season In Northern Arizona
The San Diego State women's golf team begins its 2007-08 slate this week at the La Quinta Inn & Suites Mountain Shootout, Sept. 17-18, in Flagstaff, Ariz. The event has become an annual tournament for the Aztecs who claimed the individual title the last two seasons and the team championship in 2005.
This year's edition of the La Quinta Inn & Suites Mountain Shootout will take place at the par-72, 6,426-yard Aspen Valley Golf Club, next to the Continental Country Club where the event was held the last two years. Teams will play 18 holes each of the two days, beginning at 8 a.m. Monday and 8:30 a.m. Tuesday (shotgun start).
Aztecs To Bring Two Squads
Aztec head coach Felicia Brown will bring two squads to the opening tournament. The Red team will be led by senior Anna Booth (Coffs Harbour, Australia) and junior Maki Kamimura (West Covina, Calif.), who placed one-two in the individual standings a year ago.
Sophomore Petra Cole (San Diego, Calif.), who redshirted a year ago, will be joined by a pair of freshmen and San Diego-area natives on the Red team in Stephanie Arcala (Oceanside, Calif.) and Samantha Roberts (Carlsbad, Calif.).
The Black squad consists of juniors Alana Erlandson (Palm Desert, Calif.) and Jackie Kazarian (Dana Point, Calif.), sophomore Ashley Wood (Lake Tahoe, Calif.) and freshmen Kaitlen Miyajima (Wailuku, Hawaii) and Ashley Dyer (Corcoran, Calif.).
SDSU will also have two individuals at the event with sophomore Marcela Campbell (Glendale, Calif.) and senior Kim Carmody (Palatine, Ill.).
Five current Aztecs competed in last year's tournament in Flagstaff, while four participated in 2005.
Flashback: 2006 La Quinta Inn & Suites Shootout
SDSU took their yearly trip to Flagstaff, Ariz., to play in the LaQuinta Inn & Suites Mountain Shootout and junior Anna Booth won the tournament with a 2-over 148. The 36-hole score of 148 set a new career best for Booth, who fired a final round 1-over-par 74. The victory was Booth's first career title.
Over the two-day tournament, Booth led the field in par 4 scoring at 1-under and finished the tournament with eight birdies and 21 pars.
Close behind Booth was sophomore Maki Kamimura, who finished one stroke behind with a 149. The second-place finish was a career high for Kamimura, who finished the tournament tied for third in par 3 (+1) and par 5 (-3) scoring.
Booth's victory was the second straight for SDSU, which also claimed medalist honors in 2005, when Megan McLeod took home the title with a 1-under 145.
Besides Booth and Kamimura, five other Aztecs also competed as individuals in the 55-golfer field. Junior MacKenzie Swecker improved her first round score by five strokes to end up at 13-over 159, which was good for 22nd place. Redshirt freshman Ashley Wood and junior transfer Kim Carmody tied for 46th at 32-over 178, while freshmen Marcela Campbell and Baylee Turner finished in 48th and 49th place, respectively.
Summer School
The Aztec golf team made good use of its summer months competing as individuals in several events in the San Diego area.
Sophomore Petra Cole claimed the 2007 San Diego City Amateur golf championship in mid-August, holding on for a one-stroke victory at the Torrey Pines South Golf Course. Cole won the 72-hole tournament despite posting an 88 in the final round, edging future Aztec teammate Samantha Roberts with a final score of 325.
Earlier this summer, several other current and former Aztecs were also in action at the 12th annual California Women's State Championship, July 16-18, at the Pala Mesa Resort in Fallbrook, Calif.
Junior Maki Kamimura placed fifth overall in the 93-golfer field, after logging a 10-over 226 at the 54-hole event. Jamie Oliver, who recently completed her eligibility with the Aztecs, was ninth with a 230, while junior Jackie Kazarian was two strokes behind with a 232 for 11th place. Junior Heather Wilson (Chula Vista, Calif.) rounded out the SDSU contingent with a 25th-place finish with a 239.
Coming Attractions
Following the opener in Flagstaff, the Aztecs will head to Colorado for the CU Heather Farr Invitational, Oct. 1-2, before returning to San Diego host their lone home event, the Aztec Classic, Oct. 15-16. One of the team's two trips to Hawaii, rounds out the fall schedule Oct. 30-31, at the Kent Youel Invitational.
SDSU begins its 2008 spring schedule on Feb. 11-12, at the Lady Braveheart Classic in Beaumont, Calif.
Head Coach Felicia Brown
Head coach Felicia Brown is in her sixth season at the helm of the SDSU golf program after serving as an assistant in 2001-02. A native San Diegan, Brown prepped locally at San Marcos High School before playing collegiately at Arizona.
She is assisted by Doug Barba for the fifth year in a row.
