FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. - The San Diego State women's golf team is third after the first round of the La Quinta Inn & Suites Mountain Shootout Monday at the par-72, 6,426-yard Aspen Valley Golf Course in Flagstaff, Ariz. The Aztecs shot a 328 in their first 18 holes of the 2007-08 season, and are just four strokes off the lead currently held by host Northern Arizona and New Mexico State, who are tied at 36-over 324.

Weather conditions at the course in Flagstaff were far from ideal as wind gusts ranged from 35-40 miles per hour with over an inch of rain the evening before.

"It was tough (weather) conditions to start the season off with, but I feel optimistic about our performance today, especially with three players in the top four of the standings," Aztec head coach Felicia Brown said. "If the weather gets better tomorrow, I expect better scores across the board."

San Diego State brought two squads of five plus a pair of individuals to its first tournament. Junior Jackie Kazarian (Dana Point, Calif.), who is playing for the `B' or Black team, is just one stroke off the lead with a 5-over 77, after recording pars on 13 of the 18 holes. True freshman Samantha Roberts (Carlsbad, Calif.) and senior Kim Carmody (Palatine, Ill.) are one back in third place at 6-over 78. Roberts had a field-best three birdies on the No. 1, 8 and 11 holes, while Carmody was tied for the lead in par-3 scoring at 1-under.

Besides Roberts, two other Aztecs competing for the `A' or Red team are currently in the top 25 in the individual standings. Junior Maki Kamimura (West Covina, Calif.) and sophomore Petra Cole (San Diego, Calif.) are tied for 12th at 10-over 82. Freshman Stephanie Arcala (Oceanside, Calif.) and senior Anna Booth (Coffs Harbour, Australia), who earned last year's medalist honors at the event, rounded out the `A' squad with matching performances of 14-over 86 (tied for 26th).

The second and final round of the 2007 La Quinta Inn & Suites Mountain Shootout will begin with a shotgun start at 8:30 a.m. on Tuesday morning.
