SAN DIEGO - Freshman goalkeeper Aubree Southwick made nine saves and pushed her personal scoreless streak to 429 minutes, but it wasn't enough as No. 14 California defeated the San Diego State women's team, 2-0, on Sunday at the SDSU Sports Deck.

The two teams played tough defense throughout with SDSU holding the edge in fouls, 16-13, while the Aztecs were also able to hold the vaunted Bear offense to two goals on 12 shots at the net.

"This was a really good game for us going up against the No. 14 team in the country," said head coach Mike Friesen. "Our women stuck to our game plan and played some tremendous defense that frustrated a very good team. We can really build off this game as we take to the road this week."

Southwick had her streak of three consecutive shutouts snapped at the 52:39 mark in the second half when Cal freshman Alex Morgan scored on a one-on-one play off the pass from fellow freshman McKenna-Louise McKetty. Morgan took the pass from her teammate and was able to get behind Southwick and pushed one through the left side of the net.

California would tack on an extra goal 33 minutes later when senior Caroline Lea corralled the ball after a free kick from senior Caitlin Hannegan for her second goal of the season.

The Aztecs managed only three shots, all in the first half, and missed their best chance to get on the board nine minutes before the half when sophomore Heather Vandevanter missed converting on a header in front of the net that went high of the cross bar from senior Jackie Ragudos.

The Scarlet and Black return to action on Wednesday when it begins a four-match road trip against San Jose State. Kick off between the Aztecs and Spartans is slated for 7 p.m.
