San Diego State senior team captain Lisa Naucler posted the Aztecs' top time, while two others set personal records and six established season bests at the 63rd Annual Aztec Invitational Saturday morning at Balboa Park.
For the second consecutive race, Naucler was the first Aztec to cross the finish line as she completed the course in 19 minutes, 16 seconds. Fellow returning letterwinner, Stephanie Armstrong, turned in her strongest performance of 2007 with a season-best time of 19:29. The sophomore's effort was just over a minute better than her result from a year ago when she finished the 5K race in 20:30.
Junior Kristin Glen continued her solid running in her first year on campus placing third among all Aztecs with a time of 19:53 and was followed by another junior newcomer in Alyssa Robinson, who clocked in at 20:01.
The first of a pair to record a personal record was sophomore Darien Buc, who posted the team's fifth fastest time of the morning coming in at 20:02. Her performance was 59 seconds better than her first race of the season (Fullerton Season Opener), 1:14 faster than her time at the 2006 Aztec Invitational and 31 seconds faster than her previous PR established as a freshman.
Freshman Andrea Norton competed in her first meet as an Aztec and finished the 5K in 20:08, while sophomore Makenzie Mabry ran a season-best 20:26.
Junior Anne Vieira ran well for a second straight week and in the process tied a personal milestone. Two weeks ago at the Fullerton Season Opener, the San Diego native ran 20:32 to set a new PR and on Saturday, Vieira made it two-for-two as she ran an identical 20:32. More impressive is the fact that she shaved 1:43 off her time from a year ago on the same course.
Sophomore Sara Cunningham was another to set a season-best with a time of 20:44 and was followed by freshmen Sara Beyers (20:46), Elizabeth Leonard (season-best 20:53) and Michelle Martinez (21:09).
In the Open Race, sophomore Lindsay Barajas and freshman Lindsey Deane each established season bests. Barajas completed the 5K in 20:59, over a minute faster than her season-opening time, while Deane was 11 seconds better than her effort at Fullerton.
Overall, San Diego State finished the invitational in 11th place (278 points) out of 14 teams in a highly competitive field that featured fourth-ranked Arkansas, which won its third straight Aztec Invite title and sixth overall. Also in the field were UC Santa Barbara, ranked fifth in the West Region, the West's 15th-ranked team in Loyola Marymount, Northern Arizona (No. 8 - Mountain Region) and Southern Utah (No. 12 - Mountain).
SDSU returns to action Saturday, Sept. 22, when it competes in the Big Wave Invitational in Honolulu, Hawaii. Starting time is set for 7:50 a.m. HT.
