SAN DIEGO - San Diego State built a two-game lead only to see 12th-ranked Brigham Young come all the way back for a 3-2 (24-30, 25-30, 30-26, 30-24, 15-7) win over the Aztecs Saturday night in Peterson Gym. The loss ended SDSU's six-match winning streak as its record dropped to 9-3 overall and 1-1 in Mountain West Conference play. BYU evened its MWC mark at 1-1 as well while improving to 7-3 overall.

SDSU had five players finish the evening in double figures in kills led by Hannah Evans, who tied her career high with 16, Sydney De Turk, who set a career best with a dozen, also had a team-high nine blocks for the second consecutive match.

Stephanie Darnall matched De Turk's kill total with 12 kills while Lindsey Mahan and Lauren Salisbury each had 10 apiece along with seven blocks.

Brigham Young also had five players in double figure in kill with Erica Lott and Chelsea Goodman finishing with 22 and 19 respectively. Rachel Dyer, who hit a match-best .542 over the five games, had 17 kills while teammate Bryn Porter chipped in with 12.

In the opening game, the lead changed hands just twice, but neither team was able to gain more than a two-point advantage until SDSU scored three straight to take the lead for good at 21-18. The Cougars came back to close to within appoint at 24-23, but SDSU scored five of the next six points, led by two kills and a service ace from Mahan.

BYU took a quick lead in the second contest, but the Aztecs rallied to tie the score at 10-10. A service ace by Evans and a kill by Cordeiro gave SDSU a lead it would not relinquish. The Cougars could get no closer that two the rest of the way and San Diego State closed out the game on three kills by Salisbury.

Game three was an evenly contested affair with the teams tied at 16-all just past the midway point. San Diego State then scored six of the next seven points to take a 22-17 lead and appeared to be in control. However, it was at this point that the visitors began their match-winning comeback, eventually knotting the score at 25-25. BYU then got a pair of kills from Lott along with a trio of SDSU attack errors to claim the four-point victory.

Brigham Young maintained its momentum in the fourth game, taking control midway through the contest and building a 20-19 lead into a 25-20 advantage. The teams traded points the rest of the way with the Cougars winning the game and tying the match at two games apiece.

In the decider, the Cougars took a 2-0 lead and were never caught as it completed its comeback for the match victory. They built that to as many as five points at 8-3 thanks to kills by Dyer and Porter plus three SDSU attack errors. The Aztec came back to within two points at 9-7, but BYU rattled off six straight points courtesy of kills by Lott, Goodman and Porter plus three SDSU attack errors to close out the game and match.

San Diego State will now take a break from conference action as it travels across town to meet the 17th-ranked University of San Diego Toreros on Tuesday, Sept. 18, at 7:00 p.m. in USD's Jenny Craig Pavilion.
