ALBUQUERQUE, New Mexico -
In its season-opening tournament, the San Diego State men's golf team rests in a tie for second place after shooting 3-over 579 through 36 holes on Friday at the William H. Tucker Intercollegiate at the UNM Championship Course in Albuquerque, New Mexico.
The Aztecs (289-290), along with Colorado, sit three strokes back of the clubhouse leader Pepperdine (290-286), which shot an even-par 576, as they take to the course on Saturday for the final round of competition.
Leading the way for SDSU in his first-ever collegiate tournament was freshman Johan Carlsson (71-72). The Gothenberg, Sweden, native sits in a tie for eighth on the leader board after finishing with a two-round score of 1-under 143.
Returning PING All-American senior Aaron Goldberg (72-73) sits two shots back of his teammate in a tie for 12th-place after carding a one-over par score of 145.
Freshman Matt Hoffenberg, also making his Aztec debut, registered a first day score of 146 (73-73) and currently rests in a tie for 15th while teammate junior David Palm is two strokes back after carding a 4-over 148.
Rounding out the day for the Aztecs, was senior Jamie Puterbaugh who tallied a score of 150, placing him in a tie for 43rd. Puterbaugh struggled in the first round shooting a 78, but rebounded to fire a 72 in the second round.
SDSU leads five Mountain West Conference foes at the tournament, with the closest conference rival being New Mexico in a tie for fifth, eight strokes behind the Aztecs.
Pepperdine not only leads the tournament with its team score, but also is primed to win the individual medalist honors with Jesse Barnsley, who shot an 11-under 133, leading the field by seven strokes.
