HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. - After an opening-game win, San Diego State struggled over the next three sets as it dropped a 3-1 (30-24, 22-30, 19-30, 28-30) decision to Siena in the first-ever meeting on the volleyball court between the schools. The match was the opener on day two of the Hofstra/Asics Invitational being played in Hempstead, N.Y.
With the loss, SDSU dropped to 3-2 on the young season while Siena improved to 2-3.
Aztec outside hitter Stephanie Darnall led all players with 17 kills and added 14 digs to record her fourth double-double in her team's five matches in 2007. She was the lone player to reach double figures in kills fro SDSU as teammates Lauren Salisbury, Kelley Wahlin and Lindsey Mahan added eight apiece.
The Saints, meanwhile, were paced by 16 kills from Aubrey Bobo while Burgundy McCurty and Nadiege Honore added 15 and 13 respectively.
Siena hit .276 over the four games while SDSU was held to a .211 attack percentage. After winning the opening contest of the match with a .286 hitting mark, the Aztecs were able to hit just .182 over the final three games.
The lone offensive category in which SDSU held the advantage was in blocking, where yt finished with 11 compared to seven by the Saints. Three players chipped in with five apiece for the Aztecs including Salisbury, Mahan and Sydney De Turk.
San Diego State concludes play in the Hofstra tournament with a match against the host school this evening beginning at 5:30 p.m. (EDT).
