WETZLAR, Germany - Current San Diego State men's tennis player Bartosz Golas returned to his native country last week (July 30-Aug. 5) to compete in doubles action at the 2007 Germany F11 Futures Tournament in Wetzlar, Germany. The Munich, Germany, native teamed with former Aztec All-American Benedikt Stronk to reach the semifinals of the International Tennis Federation sanctioned event.
The duo of Golas and Stronk advanced in their first round match by defeating the team of Nikolas Holzen and Stefan Seifert in three sets, 6-1, 2-6, 6-1.
In the second round, Golas and Stronk dropped the first set 3-6, to fellow countrymen Tobias Klein and Daniel Muller. Golas and Stronk regained the momentum by winning the second set, 6-3, before pushing through to the semifinals by claiming the third set, 6-1.
The tandem of Golas and Stronk's run ended in the semifinals, as the pair was defeated in straight sets, 7-6 (0), 6-4, by Mexico's Fernando Cabrera and Germany's Gerhard Fahlke.
Golas, who sat out last season as a junior-college transfer, will be looking to breakthrough into a spot in head coach Gene Carswell's singles and doubles lineup in 2007-08.
Stronk, a letterwinner from 2005-06, was a two-time all-Mountain West Conference selection and teamed with Markus Dickhardt to gain All-American honors in 2006 after advancing to the NCAA quarterfinals.
