The 23rd in a daily series during fall camp, get to know freshman, punter/place-kicker Thomas DeMarco.
GoAztecs.com: How has your experience at camp been so far?
DeMarco: My experience here at San Diego State has been good. I started fall camp rooming with Mike Hughes, the starting punter and across the hall was (long-snapper) Tyler Schmitt and (place-kicker) Garrett Palmer. I really had the ideal situation to be able to get some extra help from those guys.
Goaztecs.com: What do you miss about being able to play in front of your hometown crowd in Palm Desert, Calif.?
DeMarco: Well, I played quarterback in high school, so I definitely miss being able to just throw the ball around.
GoAztecs.com: Are you going to try and earn a quarterback spot at SDSU?
DeMarco: I would like to give it a shot eventually. Right now I have to try and earn my place on the team as a kicker, but I don't want to let my quarterback dreams die.
GoAztecs.com: How was your first day of classes (on Monday)?
DeMarco: I was actually scared coming into the first day of classes because I was was told that college is very different from high school, but all of my classes are great and my teachers were very nice and personable. If I stay on top of my school work, it won't be that bad.
GoAztecs.com: What will you be majoring in at San Diego State?
DeMarco: I am a business major and I will probably minor in kinesiology.
GoAztecs.com: Do you know what profession you want to get into after college?
DeMarco: I'm not sure what I want to do yet. All I know right know is that I want to get my education and play some football.
GoAztecs.com: What is your favorite snack?
DeMarco: I like chocolate shakes. Sometimes I will try the strawberry and vanilla shakes, but I usually stick to chocolate.
GoAztecs.com: Do you have any superstitions?
DeMarco: No, but I do notice that I put my left shoe on before my right shoe.
GoAztecs.com: What are your hobbies outside of football?
DeMarco: Right now, my hobbies are studying and getting A's in my classes. Outside of school and football, I would say I like to travel. I grew up in Pasadena, Calif., went to school in Palm Desert and I have some family in Oceanside so I love to travel and visit all of my friends and family.
GoAztecs.com: What helped you decide to play at SDSU?
DeMarco: Defensive coordinator Bob Elliott was the biggest reason I decided to come here. I didn't earn a scholarship, but I came in and talked to Coach Elliott and he was great. I was recruited by a few other schools, but I just loved the San Diego area and felt that I could prove myself here.
