SAN DIEGO - San Diego State women's track and field head coach Rahn Sheffield announced the Aztecs' 2008 schedule Tuesday morning. Highlighting the upcoming slate is SDSU's only home meet of the season, the Aztec Invitational, and trips to the San Diego City Championships and the Cal-Nevada Championships, where the Scarlet and Black will look to defend its team title from a year ago.
San Diego State will open at the National Pole Vault Summit in Reno, Nev., on Jan. 18 and will continue the rest of its indoor schedule on the road. The Aztecs will make their way to Flagstaff, Ariz., to compete in the Mountain T's Invite on Feb. 2, the Bronco Invitational in Nampa, Idaho, on Feb. 8-9, and prepare for the Mountain West Conference Indoor Championships at the Husky Classic in Seattle, Wash., Feb. 16-17. The indoor portion of the schedule will end with the conference meet in Colorado Springs, Colo., set for Feb. 28-March 1, and the NCAA Championships slated for March 14-15, in Fayetteville, Ark.
The Aztecs kick-off their outdoor campaign in "America's Finest City" to compete in the San Diego City Championships scheduled for March 8. The following week, SDSU will welcome a number of schools to Montezuma Mesa on March 14-15 to compete in the annual Aztec Invitational at SDSU Sports Deck.
The three weeks following the Scarlet and Black's lone home meet, the Aztecs will make their way north competing at the Trojan Invitational in Los Angeles on March 22. The next weekend they will travel to Fresno, Calif., for the Cal-Nevada Championships on March 28-29, where they will look to repeat as meet champions.
The Aztecs' `A' team will continue their trip around California as they will travel to Palo Alto, Calif., for the Stanford Invitational while their `B' team will compete in Pomona, Calif., at the Pomona-Pitzer Invitational on April 4-5.
After five weeks of competing in The Golden State, SDSU is scheduled to travel to Knoxville, Tenn., for the Sea Ray Relays on April 10-11 before returning to California where the `A' team will compete in Walnut, Calif., for the Mt. SAC Relays on April 17-20. Meanwhile, the `B' team will compete at the Long Beach Invitational on April 19.
The following week, the Aztecs will split again with one group traveling to Philadelphia, Pa., for the Penn Relays on April 24-26, while the second group is slated to compete at the UCSD Invitational on April 25 and 26.
San Diego State will end its nine-week run with a return trip to the Bay Area as its `A' team will compete in the California Collegiate Challenge (May 2-3), while its `B' team makes the short drive to Irvine, Calif., for the Steve Scott Invitational.
With the regular season in the books, SDSU will look for its second MWC outdoor track and field title as it travels to Fort Worth, Texas, for the Mountain West Championships, May 14-17.
Following a two-week layoff, SDSU athletes who regionally qualified throughout the year in their respective events will compete at the NCAA West Regional Championships on May 30-31, at a site to be determined. The 2008 season will come to a close in Des Moines, Iowa, with the NCAA Championships set for June 11-14, at Drake Stadium on the campus of Drake University.
