SAN DIEGO - With a successful offseason already under its belt, the San Diego State football team officially began its preparations for the upcoming 2007 season with a three and a half hour practice Friday afternoon at the Aztecs' on-campus workout facility.
"It is tough to stand out when you are not in pads, but I thought (wide receiver) Vincent Brown jumped out and (offensive lineman) Fred Amano did as well with his quickness up front," head coach Chuck Long said. "I thought those two guys really looked good."
SDSU, which will not wear pads for its first two sessions, worked out under clear, sunny skies running through its normal rotation to start practice, before splitting off into position groups for the majority of the afternoon. The first practice ended with offense against defense, followed by field goals, conditioning and extra drills for the team's almost 30 newcomers.
Besides the addition of several new faces to Montezuma Mesa, the Aztecs also broke out new practice gear. The defense, which for several years had worn black, sported bright red jerseys, while the quarterbacks and specialists made the move from red to a dark green.
The Aztecs will continue with single afternoon workouts throughout the weekend with the first day of full pads slated for Tuesday.
