SAN DIEGO - San Diego State men's basketball head coach Steve Fisher announced Friday the 16-game Mountain West Conference portion of the Aztecs' 2007-08 schedule. Of the 16 league contests SDSU will play this season, 15 are slated to be broadcast live on either VERSUS, CSTV or The Mtn.
"We are excited about the upcoming Mountain West Conference season," Fisher said. "We will once again have an extremely competitive, well-coached league that will include five first-year head coaches in the conference, which will bring a new look to some of our traditional opponents. The MWC will once again be one of the premier conferences in the country."
Overall, San Diego State's 15 televised league games and five MWC national television appearances ranks second among the Mountain West's nine member institutions.
"The fact that we have been selected to be on national television five times is an indication of how others feel about San Diego State basketball," Fisher said. "We are very pleased the entire country will be able to see Aztec Basketball."
Of San Diego State's eight conference home games, five occur on a Saturday, including marquee contests against UNLV and Brigham Young. In addition, all of SDSU's league matchups will be played on a Saturday (five games) or a Wednesday (three games).
The Aztecs open MWC action with three games shown on The Mtn., the first of which will take place at Cox Arena vs. TCU on Saturday, Jan. 5. Following its conference opener, SDSU will hit the road for a Saturday, Jan. 12, showdown with New Mexico before playing host to Utah on Wednesday, Jan. 16.
In the second of a two-game homestand, San Diego State will make its first 2008 league appearance on national television when it welcomes Wyoming for a Saturday, Jan. 19, contest set for CSTV.
After traveling to Provo, Utah, for a Wednesday, Jan. 23, game at Brigham Young (The Mtn.), the Aztecs return to Cox Arena to play UNLV (Jan. 26) in front of a national audience on VERSUS. SDSU wraps up the first half of conference action with a Tuesday, Jan. 29, contest at Colorado State and then at home vs. Air Force on Wednesday, Feb. 6. Both games are scheduled to be shown on The Mtn.
Three days after taking on the Falcons, San Diego State will travel to the Lone Star State for a clash with TCU on Saturday, Feb. 9. Following a home game with New Mexico (Feb. 13; The Mtn.), SDSU will appear on VERSUS for a second time in a road test at Utah on Saturday, Feb. 16. The Aztecs' two-game road trip will continue and take them to Laramie, Wyo., on Feb. 19, as they tangle with the Cowboys on The Mtn. before returning to Montezuma Mesa.
In its fourth nationally televised game, San Diego State will play host to BYU on CSTV on Saturday, Feb. 23. Immediately following its game with the defending regular season champions, the Aztecs will visit the Thomas & Mack Center for a CSTV contest against the defending conference tournament champs, UNLV, on Tuesday, Feb. 26.
SDSU will close out its 2008 home schedule against Colorado State (March 1) before hitting the road to play Air Force (March 8) in both team's regular season finale. Both games can be seen on The Mtn.
San Diego State will release its non-conference schedule once it is finalized. The Aztecs are in search of one more opponent to complete its 2007-08 slate.
SDSU returns three starters, including seven of its top nine scorers off of last year's team that finished 22-11 and advanced to the second round of the postseason NIT. The Aztecs, which have won 25 of their last 28 home games, have won 46 games since the beginning of the 2005-06 season.
Of the 11 times that a Steve Fisher coached team has returned three starters, 10 have advanced to postseason play, including seven NCAA Tournament appearances, and have averaged 21.7 victories.
