SAN DIEGO - San Diego State track and field athlete Decontee Kaye (Hayward, Calif./James Logan HS) was one of 20 individuals to receive the Breitbard Star of the Month award for the month of June, the San Diego Hall of Champions announced Thursday.
Kaye, who just completed her sophomore season, earned All-America honors in the outdoor triple jump after she finished in fourth place at the NCAA Track and Field Championships in Sacramento, Calif., on June 9. The 2007 Mountain West Conference champion in the event leaped a personal- and school-record 44 feet, 4.25 inches. Prior to the finals, Kaye's individual best was 44-0.75.
As an All-American, Kaye made it seven straight seasons in which an SDSU athlete has earned individual national accolades. She also became the first Aztec in school history to earn All-America honors in a jumping event.
With her fourth-place effort, she earned San Diego State five team points, putting it in a tie for 46th place out of 73 scoring schools. The Aztecs' team showing was their best since 2005 when they finished 29th with nine points.
Kaye, along with the 20 other recipients from the professional, amateur and high school ranks, will be invited to the 62nd annual Viejas Salute to the Champions dinner on a date to be announced in February, 2008.
