SAN DIEGO - San Diego State was recently rated 11th in the country of 113 schools on the fourth annual Gender Equity Scorecard. The mark was the highest in the Mountain West Conference for the second consecutive season.
The Gender Equity Scorecard grades the major Division 1-A colleges based on their degree of commitment to their women's intercollegiate sports programs for the 2004-05 academic/sports year. The Aztecs were one of 11 colleges to earn an "A" grade with a score of -19.97.
The scorecard is based on the criteria utilized by the Chronicle of Higher Education in its study on "gender equity" in 2006. The scorecard is the sum total of the college's score according to the five criteria: participation, scholarship, coaches' salaries, recruitment budget and operating expenses. For each of the criteria, a standard or goal was established and each college received a +/- score depending on how it measured up to the standard.
San Diego State's score of -19.97 was ahead of Georgia (-21.04) and just behind Western Michigan (-19.48). Nevada had the highest score at -5.17.
