A Look Back at the 2006 Pac-10 Championships
The San Diego State women's rowing team competed in its final regatta of the 2006 season on May 14 at the Pac-10 Rowing Championships along the shores of Lake Natoma in Rancho Cordova, Calif. Following a morning program of preliminary heats, the Aztecs' three crews advanced to the petite finals of their respective events in the varsity eight, second varsity eight and varsity four categories during the afternoon.
In the second varsity eight petite final, SDSU earned a second-place finish with a time of 7:03.60, holding off Loyola Marymount (7:04.12) at the wire in a closely contested race. Oregon State (6:58.30) created enough separation during the second half of the 2000-meter course to squeeze out the win.
"The (second varsity) had a solid race," said Aztec head coach Jennifer Zebroski. "We had to make a lineup change and replace the stroke (position) just before the weekend, and I think that may have affected them in the first heat. But they adjusted well in the petite final and got into a good rhythm."
In the varsity eight competition, the SDSU boat came away with a fifth-place finish in its petite final, completing the course with a 6:50.34 clocking, just behind Gonzaga (6:48.09), Sacramento State (6:45.96) and LMU (6:45.19). Oregon State once again claimed the top spot with a time of 6:42.00.
Rounding out the day's action was a third-place performance by the Aztecs' varsity four crew, which crossed the finish line with a time of 8:17.90, trailing USC (7:53.14) and LMU (8:08.60).
"I feel we've made progress as a team this year," coach Zebroski added. "We improved on our results from last year (at the Pac-10 Championships), and I think we can take pride in that. We're definitely headed in the right direction."
Last Race With the Aztecs
The San Diego State rowing team wrapped up the WIRA Championships with a bronze medal by the Second Novice Eight boat Sunday, April 29 on Lake Natoma in Sacramento, Calif. Three other Aztec boats finished among the top five in their respective Grand Final race.
SDSU's Second Novice Eight, which consisted of Laura Norton (cox), Melissa Carey (stroke), Courtney Caldwell (seven), Katie Rusch (six), Kelly West (five), Lindsay Butcher (four), Allison Nance (three), Lauren Lee (two) and Gabriela Reyes (bow), finished third in the Grand Final with a time of 7 minutes, 54.7 seconds, well ahead of second-place UC Santa Barbara (8:15.9).
The Aztec Second Varsity Eight and Novice Eight each took fourth in their event. The Second Varsity Eight rowed to a time of 7:12.3, while the Novice Eight (7:21.6) was edged by Humbolt State (7:21.3) for third place.
