ATHENS, Ga. - San Diego State's 32nd-ranked duo of Christian Groh and Markus Dickhardt emerged victorious from their round of 32 match as they posted a 7-6, 6-4 victory over No. 41 Diego Camacho and Ross Cunningham of Tulsa on Thursday afternoon. With the win, Groh-Dickhardt earn the right to face fourth-ranked Danny Bryan and Colt Gaston of LSU on Friday at Dan Magill Tennis Complex in Athens, Ga.
Advancing to the round of 16 did not come easy for the Aztec tandem as they were forced into a first-set tiebreaker, one they pulled out en route to a 7-6 victory. The second set was a bit easier as the SDSU pair combined to down their Tulsa counterparts, 6-4, to move on in the national draw. Next up for San Diego State's top doubles team is a match-up with No. 4 Bryan-Gaston of LSU, who were 6-3, 4-6, 6-4 winners over Western Michigan's Tim Bradshaw and Brady Crosby.
Earlier in the day, Dickhardt competed in the round of 32 of the singles draw and was eliminated by one of the nation's top players in third-ranked Jesse Levine of Florida. After playing a three-set match on Wednesday, the SDSU senior came out on Thursday and unfortunately was downed in straight sets, 6-2, 6-2, to an individual that was named the Intercollegiate Tennis Association's national rookie of the year and came into the match undefeated at 22-0.
Groh and Dickhardt will continue their quest for a national doubles championship tomorrow on the campus of the University of Georgia at a time to be announced.
