Senior Cory Segall (La Jolla, Calif.) fired a 2-under par 70 on Friday to lead the San Diego State men's golf team during the second day of action at the 2007 NCAA West Regional championships in Tempe, Ariz. Despite shaving seven strokes off Thursday's opening round, the Aztecs were unable to gain ground in the team standings after carding a 1-over 289 to remain in the 24th position out of 27 teams at the 7,057-yard, par-72 Karsten Golf Course.
UCLA still occupies the top spot at 35-under 576 for the tournament, maintaining a slim one-shot lead over South Carolina (-34), while host school Arizona State (-26) and USC (-26) are tied for third. Arizona State's Benjamin Alvarado and Jamie Lovemark of USC share the individual lead after the second day of competition at 12-under 132.
After staggering to an 81 on Thursday, Segall improved by 11 strokes during the second round, draining five birdies to go along with an eagle on the par-5 17th hole. With his effort, the La Jolla High alumnus climbed 17 places into a tie for the 123rd position with a combined 7-over 151.
Junior Chad Moscovic (Stockton, Calif.) and sophomore Adam Porzak (Poway, Calif.) also posted red figures for SDSU on Friday as both players sank three birdies apiece en route to an identical 1-under 71. Moscovic owns the Aztecs' top score through 36 holes, tying for the 68th spot with a combined 1-under 143, while Porzak jumped 17 places into a tie for 103th at 3-over 147.
Meanwhile, juniors Aaron Goldberg (Encinitas, Calif.) and Jamie Puterbaugh (Carlsbad, Calif.) found themselves headed in the opposite direction. On the heels of an opening-round 72, Goldberg shot a season-high 77, falling from the 74th spot into a tie for 112th after recording six bogeys and a double-bogey for a combined 5-over 147. Puterbaugh also ran into difficulty on Friday, carding a double- and triple-bogey on the front nine en route to an 81.
The NCAA West Regionals conclude on Saturday with the final round of play as the Aztecs tee off with UC Irvine and Pennsylvania, beginning at 12:29 p.m. A live scoring link is available under the events calendar on the home page of GoAztecs.com.
