The San Diego State men's golf team shot an 8-over par 296 on Thursday during the first round of play at the 2007 NCAA West Regional championships in Tempe, Ariz. The Aztecs completed the first 18 holes in 24th place out of 27 teams at the 7,057-yard, par 72 Karsten Golf Course. UCLA sits atop the team standings after the first day of competition with a combined 20-under 268, five shots in front of second-place South Carolina (-15), while host school Arizona State (-13) and New Mexico (-13) are tied for the third spot.

Juniors Aaron Goldberg (Encinitas, Calif.) and Chad Moscovic (Stockton, Calif.) turned in SDSU's best score of the day as both players carded an even-par 72 to tie for 74th with nine other golfers heading into Friday's second round. Playing in his first NCAA regional tournament, Moscovic finished strong with three birdies over his last five holes, while Goldberg, a two-time all-Mountain West Conference honoree, offset three bogeys with three birdies of his own. Erik Flores of UCLA sits atop the individual leaderboard at 8-under 64, just one stroke ahead of New Mexico's Charlie Beljan (-7).

Also seeing regional action for the first time are junior Jamie Puterbaugh (Carlsbad, Calif.) and sophomore Adam Porzak (Poway, Calif.), who find themselves in a tie for the 121st position as each posted a 4-over 76. Despite three birdies, Puterbaugh unable to overcome a pair of double-bogeys on the back nine, while Porzak, who tied for first at the MWC championships last month, also experienced difficulty with three bogeys over his final nine holes. Meanwhile, senior Cory Segall (La Jolla, Calif.) struggled during the opening round, finishing with an 81.

The NCAA West Regionals continue on Friday with second round action as the Aztecs once again tee off with Oregon State and New Mexico, starting at 11:42 a.m. A live scoring link is available under the events calendar on the home page of GoAztecs.com. The top 10 teams will advance to the NCAA championship series, May 30-June 2, in Williamsburg, Va.
