LOS ANGELES - The 49th-ranked San Diego State women's tennis team dropped a 4-0 decision to No. 17 Florida State on Saturday morning during the first round of the NCAA tournament at Los Angeles Tennis Center. The Aztecs were overpowered by a Seminoles' lineup that included two nationally ranked singles players and one doubles team. The loss ends SDSU's season at 14-12, while FSU improves to 16-7.
The Seminoles took control from the outset, winning two doubles matches to grab an early 1-0 lead. First off the court was Alesya Vidov and Milana Yusupov, who suffered an 8-3 setback at the hands of 16th-ranked Nicola Slater and Carolin Walter at the No. 1 court. Moments later, FSU clinched the point when Lauren Macfarlane and Tapiwa Marobela defeated Eliska Krausova and Sisse Nielsen by an identical 8-3 margin on the No. 2 court. Over at No. 3, Holly Bagshaw and Kathryn Kitts trailed, 7-4, against Miranda Foley and Jessica Wente when their encounter was halted.
SDSU's struggles continued in singles action as Esther Cadua was the only Aztec player to capture a set. However, her match with Walter at No. 4 was abandoned after the Seminoles posted three straight wins to secure the necessary four team points for the victory. At center court, Vidov was unable to solve No. 102 Slater, falling in straight sets, 6-1, 6-1. Shortly thereafter, Krausova met a similar fate after yielding to 59th-ranked Macfarlane, 6-3, 6-0, in the second position.
With an insurmountable 3-0 lead, Florida State put the finishing touches on the match as Wente dispatched Yusupov, 6-1, 6-3, in the fifth spot, propelling the Seminoles into Sunday's second round against the winner of the UCLA-Quinnipiac clash. With the outcome already decided, Bagshaw and Nielsen also had their respective duals stopped.
San Diego State completed the 2007 season with its 20th NCAA tournament berth, tying Arizona and Indiana for the 11th-most appearances by a Division I school.
