PROVO, Utah - The San Diego State softball team dropped a 5-3 decision to Mountain West Conference champion Brigham Young at Provo, Utah, Saturday afternoon in the final regular season contest for both teams. With the loss, the Aztecs fell to 32-24 and 8-12 in league play, while the Cougars improved to 41-18 and 16-4 in MWC action.
Emi Snow got BYU on the scoreboard first when she led off the bottom of the second inning with a line-drive homer over the center field fence, her 16th of the season.
The Cougars loaded the bases in the third before Andrea Ramirez cleared them with a one-out double off the center field wall to push their lead to 4-0.
SDSU, which was held hitless through the first three innings, rallied for three runs in the fourth thanks to five hits. Junior Megan McDonald (Glendale, Ariz.), sophomore Christine Kulick (Aliso Viejo, Calif.) and freshman Brittany Knudsen (San Diego/Escondido HS) each hit consecutive two-out singles to score sophomore Dani Sidoti (Tucson, Ariz.), freshman Katy Erickson (Tustin, Calif.) and freshman Stefanie Quichocho-Rosario (San Diego/Morse HS) to bring the Aztecs within one run at 4-3.
Tracee Hoch's double, however, in the sixth scored pinch-runner Jana Anderson from first to put BYU up for good at 5-3.
Sophomore Melissa Owens (San Diego/Christian HS) (9-10) allowed four runs on six hits over three innings to take the loss for the Aztecs. She struck out five and walked one. Junior Christina Ross (Santa Clarita, Calif.) gave up two hits and one run over the final three innings, while striking out two and walking one.
