SAN DIEGO - The San Diego State softball team will welcome four talented new players that recently signed national letters of intent to join the program, head coach Kathy Van Wyk has announced.
Leading off the list of newcomers is Samantha Beasley, a San Diego native and the sister of current Aztec senior Amanda Beasley. Beasley comes to Montezuma Mesa after an impressive high school and travel team career.
At Steele Canyon HS in Spring Valley, Calif., the versatile Beasley amassed a .357 batting average and .450 on base percentage while playing in the both the infield and outfield. While at Steele Canyon, Beasley was named player of the year in the Cougars' 2006 Division III CIF championship season and was a three-time all-Grossmont South League first-team selection. Beasley also holds a 4.33 GPA and was on the Principal's Honor Roll from 2004-07.
In her travel team career, Beasley won a national championship in 2000 with the San Diego Renegades 10U squad in the Travel Ball "A" Division.
Another San Diego County product, pitcher and outfielder Brooke Petty joins the Scarlet and Black from Vista HS in Vista, Calif. Petty has played varsity softball for the Panthers since her freshman year and been named to the all-Avocado League first team in 2005 and 2006 as well as the all-CIF Division I second team her sophomore season (2005).
Since beginning her travel team experience in 1997, Petty's teams have won the Triple Crown Winter National Championship and the So Cal ASA State Championship as well as finishing 13th at the ASA Nationals with the Touch `em All 16U team in 2005.
The lone Northern California recruit in this year's class is shortstop Taylor Sutton from Live Oak HS in Morgan Hill, Calif. Named athlete of the year at Live Oak HS in 2007, Sutton currently holds a career batting average of .421 and .565 on base percentage as well as a .350 batting average in her senior season. Sutton has played travel ball since 1998 as a second baseman and shortstop, notching a .325 batting average with the Strike Zone 18 Gold team in 2006.
Rounding out the list of recruits is shortstop/catcher Jennifer Wisneski from Jurupa Valley HS in Mira Loma, Calif. Another four-year varsity starter, Wisneski was named first-team all-league in 2005 and 2006, and earned the Big Bat Award, which is given out to the player with the team's highest batting average, over that two-season span. Wisneski also excelled with the Minors Gold travel team in Corona, Calif.
