SAN DIEGO - The San Diego State softball team shut out Utah, 3-0, Friday night at SDSU Softball Stadium. The Aztecs, who are receiving votes in the latest ESPN.com/USA Softball Poll, improved to 1-2 in the Mountain West Conference and 24-14 overall, while the Utes fell to 0-3 and 19-15-1.

Junior pitcher Christina Ross (Santa Clarita, Calif.) (16-7) pitched another stellar game for SDSU as she allowed just three hits and no walks over seven innings. She struck out five and picked up her eighth shutout of the season, tying her total from her previous two years.

The Aztecs hit three consecutive two-out singles to get their first run of the game in the fourth inning. Sophomore Kasey Mytinger (San Diego/West Hills HS) reached on an infield single, moved to second on a single to left field by junior Taryin Casillas (San Diego/Grossmont HS), and scored on freshman Brittany Knudsen's (San Diego/Escondido HS) single down the right field line.

SDSU added two more runs in the fifth when sophomore Melissa Owens' (San Diego/Christian HS) sacrifice fly plated freshman Lindsey Marquez (Tustin, Calif.) and an infield single by sophomore Monica Alnes (Rancho Palos Verdes, Calif.) scored junior Tamani Wells (Concord, Calif.) from third.

Mytinger had two hits and scored a run to lead the Aztec offense, which outhit Utah, 7-3, for the game.

The Aztecs and Utes will meet again tomorrow with the first pitch set for noon.
