Sophomore Adam Porzak (Poway, Calif.) fired a 2-under-par 69 on Friday to lead the San Diego State men's golf team during the second round of the Mountain West Conference championships in Tucson, Ariz. Porzak drained five birdies on the day and overcame a double-bogey on the ninth hole to finish with a combined 6-under 142 on the 7,136-yard, par-71 Catalina Course at the Omni Tucson National Resort. With his performance, the Poway High alumnus grabbed a share of the lead along with TCU's Robby Ormand and Seung-su Han of UNLV.
As a team, the Aztecs slipped one notch into fourth place on Friday after carding a 5-over-par 289 for a two-day total of 3-over 571. Brigham Young leads the tournament at 8-under-par, eight shots ahead of its closest challenger UNLV (E), while TCU (+1) finished the day in the third position, two strokes ahead of SDSU.
Junior Chad Moscovic (Stockton, Calif.) turned in the Aztecs' second-best score of the day, firing a 1-over 72 to climb six places into a tie for 27th with a two-round score of 6-over 148. Fellow classmate Aaron Goldberg (Encinitas, Calif.) fell three spots into 11th place on the individual leaderboard after shooting a 2-over 73 for a combined even-par 142. Despite an eagle on the par-5 10th hole, the La Costa Canyon High graduate was frustrated by four bogeys on the day and was unable to gain ground. Rounding the scoring for SDSU was senior Cory Segall (La Jolla, Calif.), who carded a 75 to finish in a tie for 32nd with a 36-hole total of 8-over 150.
Meanwhile following an even-par 71, junior Jamie Puterbaugh (Carlsbad, Calif.) dropped out of contention on Friday, tumbling from the 15th slot into a tie for 21st after posting a 76 during the second round. Puterbaugh was undone by five bogeys on the back nine, finishing with a combined 5-over 147.
The MWC championships conclude on Saturday with the final round of action as the Aztecs tee off with Colorado State and New Mexico, beginning at 9:20 a.m. A live scoring link is available under the events calendar on the home page of GoAztecs.com.
