SAN DIEGO - The San Diego State softball team dropped a pair of games to New Mexico at SDSU Softball Stadium Friday night. The Aztecs (27-21, 3-9 Mountain West Conference) fell in the first game, 1-0, and dropped a 4-0 decision in the nightcap. The Lobos improved to 17-17 and 6-3 with the sweep.

Freshman Lindsey Marquez (Tustin, Calif.) had three of SDSU's eight hits over the two games to pace the offense, while junior Christina Ross (Santa Clarita, Calif.) and sophomore Melissa Owens (San Diego/Christian HS) each pitched solid ballgames in a losing effort.

In the opener, Ross (19-11) allowed just four hits and one run over seven innings to take the loss. She struck out seven and issued three walks.

New Mexico got its lone run in the sixth when Jennifer Deitrich scored on an RBI groundout by Katie Gilmore.

The Aztecs rallied in the seventh when sophomore Monica Alnes (Rancho Palos Verdes, Calif.) led of the frame with a walk and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by junior Taryin Casillas (San Diego/Grossmont HS). Marquez followed with a great at-bat that ended up being a 14-pitch infield single and Alnes, who did not advance on the play, was replaced by freshman Katy Erickson (Tustin, Calif.) at second. Owens, who hadn't played since April 13 because of an injury, ripped a hard shot of the right field wall with what appeared to be the game-winning hit. The ball, however, landed less than a foot foul and Owens followed with a swinging strike for the game's final out.

Sophomore Dani Sidoti (Tucson, Ariz.) and junior Megan McDonald (Glendale, Ariz.) each singled in the losing effort.

The nightcap wasn't as dramatic as SDSU once again failed to come up with the big hits. Marquez had two singles, while freshman Brittany Knudsen (San Diego/Escondido HS) and Owens each added singles of their own.

Owens (8-8), pitching for the first time since April 7, scattered four runs (two earned) on seven hits over seven innings to take the loss for the Aztecs. She struck out 11 and walked two.

San Diego State plays host to Colorado State this weekend with a game at 6 p.m. Saturday and noon Sunday.
