The San Diego State men's golf team finds itself in third place after the first round of the 2007 Mountain West Conference championships in Tucson, Ariz. The Aztecs carded a 2-under-par 282 on the 7,136-yard, par 71 Catalina Course at the Omni Tucson National Resort. Brigham Young sits atop the team standings after the first day of competition with a combined 12-under 272, three shots in front of second-place UNLV (-9), while SDSU (-2), TCU (E) and Colorado State (+3) round out the top five.
Individually, the Aztecs were paced by sophomore Adam Porzak (Poway, Calif.), who completed the first 18 holes in third place out of 45 golfers after firing a 4-under-par 67, trailing leader Seung-su Han of UNLV by just two strokes. Porzak offset a pair of bogeys with six birdies on the day en route to his lowest collegiate round ever. Junior Aaron Goldberg (Encinitas, Calif.) also posted red figures on Thursday, firing a 2-under 69 to finish in a tie for eighth.
Fellow classmate Jamie Puterbaugh (Carlsbad, Calif.) remains in contention as well, logging an even-par 71 to tie for the 15th position along with four other players. Rounding out the SDSU starting five were senior Cory Segall (La Jolla, Calif.) and junior Chad Moscovic (Stockton, Calif.). Segall finished the day tied for 31st with a 4-over 75, while Moscovic sits one shot behind in a tie for the 33rd spot after shooting a 5-over 76.
The MWC championships continue on Friday with second round action as the Aztecs tee off with BYU and UNLV, starting at 10:10 a.m. A live scoring link is available under the events calendar on the home page of GoAztecs.com.
