SAN DIEGO - San Diego State water polo teammates Stacy Werner (Lodi, Calif.) and Jenna Schuster (Upland, Calif.) have captured all-Mountain Pacific Sports Federation accolades for their performances this season, the league office announced Tuesday. Werner was a second team choice, while Schuster was an honorable mention selection. The all-conference honors are the first career awards for both players.
Werner, a senior utility player, has 53 goals to her credit this season, which is third on the squad and ninth in the MPSF. She has scored in 14 consecutive games and has logged at least one goal in 29 out of 32 contests this year. Werner equaled a season high with four tallies against San Jose State on March 3, propelling the Aztecs to an 11-9 victory and igniting a school-record 14-game winning streak. A ferocious defender, Werner is also SDSU's career leader with 233 steals, including a team-best 79 takeaways this season. In addition, she has chipped in 38 assists thus far in 2007, which ranks third on the squad.
A sophomore driver, Schuster leads the Aztecs with 70 goals this season, which is second in the MPSF, while her 2.19 goals-per-game average ranks sixth. With her two strikes against Arizona State on April 21, Schuster extended her scoring streak to 25 games and gave her a team-high 21 multiple-goal performances, including a career-best six tallies in SDSU's 20-6 rout of Cal State Bakersfield on March 25. She is also tops among Aztec starters with just 13 turnovers and is third on the team with 46 steals.
SDSU, ranked fifth in the latest national poll released April 18, finished the regular season with a 25-7 overall record and an 8-4 mark in league play, good for fifth place in the highly competitive MPSF.
San Diego State returns to action on Thursday, April 26, when it takes on UC Santa Barbara in the first round of the MPSF Championships in Tempe, Ariz. Opening sprint is scheduled for 11:20 a.m.
