The San Diego State women's golf team got off to a rough start Thursday at the 2007 Mountain West Conference Championships in St. George, Utah, logging a 40-over 324 to place seventh after the first 18 holes at the par-71, 6,210-yard Entrada at Snow Canyon. The Aztecs were forced to play without the team's lone senior and most experienced golfer, Jamie Oliver (Los Alamitos, Calif.), who withdrew midway through the round due to illness.

SDSU is currently three strokes in back of Wyoming and seven behind UNLV. Brigham Young, one of four MWC schools ranked in the top 45 nationally, leads the 54-hole tournament by six strokes, placing four of its golfers within the top five on the leaderboard. Cougar Rachel Newren and TCU's Catherine Matranga are tied for the individual lead at 1-over 72.

Aztec sophomore Maki Kamimura (West Covina, Calif.) and redshirt sophomore Jackie Kazarian (Dana Hills, Calif.) both carded team best scores of 9-over 80 to tie with two others for 19th place. Kamimura entered the final hole at 6-over, but ended up logging a triple bogey on the 18th.

Sophomore Alana Erlandson (Palm Desert, Calif.) is one stroke behind the duo in 23rd place with an 81, while junior transfer Kim Carmody (Palatine, Ill.) is tied for 29th with an 83.

Oliver is expected to return for the Aztecs on Friday morning when they tee-off along with Wyoming, beginning at 9:30 a.m. MT. Live stats are available at www.golfstat.com.
