Aztec junior Aaron Goldberg (Encinitas, Calif.) fired a 2-under-par 70 on Friday to lead the San Diego State men's golf team during the opening round of the ASU Thunderbird Invitational in Tempe, Ariz. Goldberg finds himself in a tie for 11th place in the 84-golfer field, while SDSU occupies the 15th spot in the team standings after carding a 10-over 298 at the 7,037-yard, par-72 Karsten Golf Course.

Goldberg sits just five strokes off the pace set by Oregon's Derek Sipe, who vaulted to the top of the individual leaderboard after recording a 7-under 65. The Ducks also posted the best team score of the day, shooting a combined 11-under 277 to finish the first round ahead of USC (-10), Texas Tech (-9) and host school Arizona State (-7).

Goldberg offset a pair of bogeys with four birdies on the day, completing the day as the lone Aztec golfer in red figures. Meanwhile, the remainder of SDSU's lineup experienced difficulty over the first 18 holes, finishing a combined 16-over par.

Second-round action at the 15-team tournament resumes on Saturday with 18 holes, beginning with a 7:30 a.m. tee time.
