Aztec Softball Loses Two Games at Colorado State

FORT COLLINS, Colo. - The San Diego State softball team dropped two games to Colorado State in cold and breezy conditions at Ram Field in Fort Collins, Colo., on Friday. The Aztecs (24-17, 1-5 Mountain West Conference) fell, 13-12, in eight innings in the first game and dropped a 6-3 decision in the nightcap, which was ended in the bottom of the sixth due to poor lighting. Both games were played in near-freezing weather in temperatures in the mid-thirties.

SDSU had 23 hits over the two games, but committed 10 errors.

In the first game, SDSU had a season-high 16 hits, but had a season-high seven errors in a 13-12, eight-inning loss.

Sophomore Kasey Mytinger (San Diego/West Hills HS) had three hits, including a grand slam in the top of the seventh inning to put the Aztecs up, 12-10, and drove in a career-high six runs to lead SDSU's offense.

The Aztecs ended up scoring six runs in the seventh, but the Rams (23-18, 2-0 MWC) answered with two runs in their bottom half of the inning and won the game on a solo homer by Jessica Strickland in the eighth.

Freshman Brittany Knudsen (San Diego/Escondido HS) went 3-for-3 for SDSU, including a double and her fourth home run of the season in the seventh, and added two runs.

Freshman Lindsey Marquez (Tustin, Calif.) had two hits and scored three runs for the Aztecs, who left nine runners on base in the game. SDSU also received two hits apiece from junior Tamani Wells (Concord, Calif.) (two runs) and senior Amanda Beasley (San Diego/Mount Miguel HS) (run, RBI).

Wells (0-2) took the loss for the Aztecs after allowing four runs (three earned) over the final three innings. She struck out two without a walk and gave up four hits. Junior Christina Ross (Santa Clarita, Calif.) pitched the first 4 2/3 innings and allowed nine runs (six earned) on 10 hits. She finished the game with six strikeouts and two walks.

In the second game, SDSU surrendered six runs in the third, but held Colorado State scoreless the rest of the way in a 6-3 loss.

Sophomore Dani Sidoti (Tucson, Ariz.) and Marquez each had two hits and scored a run for the Aztecs, while junior Megan McDonald (Glendale, Ariz.) hit her first homer of the season in the sixth inning. Knudsen had an RBI single and Wells recorded an RBI groundout.

Wells allowed four runs on four hits over 2 2/3 innings to take the loss. She struck out four and walked two. Sophomore Monica Alnes (Rancho Palos Verdes, Calif.) gave up two runs in 1/3 inning of relief and Ross (three hits, three strikeouts, three walks) did not allow a run in the final 2 1/3 innings.

San Diego State travels to Albuquerque, N.M., for a game against New Mexico at 3:30 p.m. Saturday and noon Sunday.
