SAN DIEGO - The 56th-ranked San Diego State women's tennis team won the battle for city supremacy on Tuesday when it knocked off the University of San Diego, 6-1, in a non-conference dual at USD's West Courts. After capturing a hotly contested doubles point, the Aztecs prevailed in five of six singles encounters en route to their eighth victory in 10 matches. With the win, SDSU raises its record to 12-9 on the season, while the Toreros fall to 6-15 overall.
The Aztecs got things rolling early on in doubles competition when the duo of Eliska Krausova and Sisse Nielsen pinned an 8-2 defeat on Monica Weisener and Sophia Vogt at the No. 2 position. However, USD put to rest any notions of an SDSU sweep when the tandem of Helene Lindstrand and Samantha Mouly squeaked past Alesya Vidov and Milana Yusupov, 8-6, on the No. 1 court. The stage was then set for a thrilling conclusion at No. 3 where Holly Bagshaw and Kathryn Kitts outlasted Alexandra Demidova and Justine Perl in a 9-7 cliffhanger, giving the Scarlet and Black the pivotal doubles point.
The Aztecs extended their lead to 2-0 in singles play after Esther Cadua experienced minimal resistance from Perl at the fifth position, 6-0, 6-0. The Toreros narrowed the gap to 2-1 moments later when Wiesener toppled Vidov by a 7-5, 6-2 count on the No. 1 court. That was as close as USD would get; however, as SDSU took control in the remaining matches to pull away for the win.
At No. 2, Krausova gave the visitors a little more breathing room with a 6-3, 6-4 decision over Mouly, while Yusupov provided the clinching point with a 6-1, 7-5 conquest of Demidova in just her second contest of the spring at the fourth spot.
Meanwhile, Nielsen won for the seventh time in a row despite falling behind to the Toreros' Zoe Taylor, who was forced to retire early in the second set at No. 6. Bagshaw then survived a tough battle with Lindstrand at No. 3, winning in a super tiebreaker, 6-4, 3-6, 10-8, which lowered the curtain on the Aztecs' non-conference schedule this season.
San Diego State jumps back into MWC play on Friday, April 13, for a clash with 27th-ranked Brigham Young, beginning at 2 p.m. at Aztec Tennis Center. The match will be the first of three as the Aztecs will square off against Utah on Saturday, April 14, while No. 60 UNLV awaits the Scarlet and Black on Sunday, April 15, for SDSU's Senior Day.
