LOS ANGELES - After recording a season-high 24 hits in its previous game, San Diego State saw its offense held in check by four Loyola Marymount pitchers as the Lions defeated the Aztecs, 3-1, at George Page Stadium in Los Angeles Tuesday afternoon. SDSU was unable to take advantage of a fine pitching performance by Lance Sewell, who was making his first start since April 1. The loss put an end to the Aztecs' four-game win streak and ended a three-game skid by LMU.
San Diego State (21-15) took the early lead in the contest, scoring its lone run in the second inning. Brandon Glover's double to right was followed one out later by an RBI single through the left side of the infield by Cameron Johnson.
Johnson was making his first appearance since suffering a shoulder injury in practice on Mar. 27. He was the lone Aztec to have more than one hit on the afternoon as he later added a sharp single up the middle to lead off the seventh.
LMU (14-22-1) tied the game in the bottom of the fourth, scoring an unearned run off Sewell. Singles by Eric Farris and Elvis Herrera put runners on first and third with two out. With Herrera attempting to steal second, catcher Chris Anderson's throw sailed into center field allowing Farris to score.
Loyola freshman hurler Xavier Esquivel went five innings, allowing the Aztecs just the lone run on four hits. He was replaced in the sixth by Mike Kenney (1-0) and the sophomore from Carlsbad was the beneficiary of his team's two-run rally in the bottom of that inning as he picked up his first victory of 2007.
That rally began a two-out blooper to the left of first base by Sean Dovel that fell in for a single. Herrera then smacked an RBI double down the left field line, and he scored on the ensuing double down the right field line by Angelo Songco. Those two runs were enough to send Sewell to his third defeat of the season as his record dropped to 4-3.
San Diego State put a runner on base in three of the final four innings, but was unable to cash in as relievers Kenney, Brad Meyers and Brian Wilson kept the visitors off the board. Wilson struck out two in his one inning of work, the ninth, to pick up his first save.
Up next for SDSU is a return to Mountain West Conference action as it travels to Salt Lake City later this week for a three-game series against Utah beginning Friday (Apr. 13) at 6:00 p.m. at Franklin Covey Field.
