SAN DIEGO - Junior pitcher Christina Ross (Santa Clarita, Calif.) threw a two-hitter and every San Diego State softball starter had at least one hit in a 4-1 Aztec victory over San Diego at USD Softball Complex on Wednesday night. The Aztecs improved to 12-8 with the win, while the Toreros fell to 7-10.
SDSU, which left a season-high 15 runners on base, including bases loaded in the third, fourth, fifth and sixth innings, outhit San Diego, 10-2, for the game.
It was USD who got on the scoreboard first, however, when Virginia Fritsch lifted a solo homer over of the left field fence in the bottom of the second.
Danielle Treiber followed with a bloop single to right. Ross shut down the Toreros the rest of the way, retiring the next 16 batters until Treiber reached on a fielding error by sophomore first baseman Monica Alnes (Rancho Palos Verdes, Calif.) in the seventh.
For the game, Ross (7-3), the 2006 Mountain West Conference Pitcher of the Year, struck out five batters without a walk over seven innings to earn her seventh victory of the season.
SDSU got on the scoreboard in the third when sophomore Dani Sidoti (Tucson, Ariz.) scored on a fielder's choice grounder by sophomore Erin Floros (San Diego/Mt. Carmel).
The Aztecs added two more runs in the fourth and never relinquished the lead. Freshman Brittany Knudsen (San Diego/Escondido HS) scored when Torero second baseman Treiber was unable to field a ground ball by sophomore Melissa Owens (San Diego/Christian HS). Two batters later, Floros singled home Sidoti for a 3-1 SDSU lead.
Freshman Katy Erickson (Tustin, Calif.) led off the seventh with a walk, stole second, and scored SDSU's final run of the game on a two-base throwing error by Treiber.
Junior Taryin Casillas (San Diego/Grossmont HS) went 2-for-4 to lead the Aztec offense, while Floros was 1-for-4 with two RBI. Seven others added solo hits.
San Diego State wraps up its 11-game road trip when it travels to Palo Alto, Calif., for the Stanford Invitational this weekend, beginning with a game against UC Santa Barbara at 10 a.m. Friday.
