The San Diego State softball saw its eight-game winning streak come to an end with a 5-4 loss to Ohio State in Fullerton, Calif., on Saturday afternoon. The Aztecs (21-12), who outhit the Buckeyes (17-12), 11-8, will play the host Titans (16-13) at approximately 2:45 p.m. later on in the day.

Ohio State wasted no time getting on the scoreboard as it loaded the bases with three consecutive singles to lead off the first inning. Courtney Pruner followed with a sacrifice fly to left field to score Buckeye leadoff hitter Nicole Koyono.

SDSU rallied in the second thanks to some small ball and three errors by the Ohio State defense. Sophomore Kasey Mytinger led off the inning with a single to right and was replaced at first base by freshman Katy Erickson (Tustin, Calif.). Erickson moved to second and scored on a single to left by senior Amanda Beasley (San Diego/Mount Miguel HS). Beasley, who advanced two bases after the single as Pruner bobbled the ball in right and then overthrew the Buckeye second baseman, scored from third on a squeeze bunt by junior Tamani Wells (Concord, Calif.) to put the Aztecs up, 2-1.

Ohio State, however, came back with four runs of its own in the third to open up a 5-2 lead. The Buckeyes' RBI in the inning went to Jame Jaurez (grounder to second), Megan Schwab (two-run double) and Lauren Daykin (single).

SDSU responded with solo runs in the fourth (RBI single by freshman Brittany Knudsen (San Diego/Escondido HS)) and fifth (RBI single by sophomore Kasey Mytinger (San Diego/West Hills HS)) to close within one run, but it wasn't enough as the Buckeyes held on for the 5-4 victory.

Knudsen went a perfect 3-for-3 with an RBI for the Aztecs, who outhit Ohio State, 11-8, for the game. Mytinger (2-for-2, RBI) and Beasley (2-for-3, run) added two hits apiece.

Junior pitcher Christina Ross (13-6) took the loss for the Aztecs after surrendering five runs on seven hits in three innings. She struck out two and walked two. Sophomore Melissa Owens (San Diego/Christian HS) allowed just one hit and one walk, while striking out six over the final four innings.
