COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - San Diego State sophomore Monica Alnes (Rancho Palos Verdes, Calif./Peninsula HS) has been named the Mountain West Conference Player of the Week after leading SDSU to a 5-0 record last week. The weekly award is the second of her career and first offensive award by an Aztec this season (Christina Ross and Melissa Owens were each named MWC Pitcher of the Week earlier this season.)
Alnes, a 2006 all-MWC performer, batted a team-best .529 as SDSU went 5-0, including a 4-0 record at the Aztec Invitational, and had at least one hit in every game, extending her season-long hitting streak to seven consecutive games. The first baseman also led the squad in hits (9), RBI (8), total bases (16), slugging percentage (.941) and on-base percentage (.556).
Alnes went 1-for-3 with her first career grand slam in SDSU's 7-1 win over Fordham on Saturday. She added two hits apiece in each of the other four games during the week, including a 2-for-3 outing with a double, triple, two runs and two RBI in the Aztecs' 9-4 come-from-behind win over Iona on Sunday.
This season, Alnes is fourth in the team with a .310 batting average. She has started all 25 games she has played in and has two homers and has driven in 12 runs,
SDSU (19-11), which has won its last six games, plays host to a doubleheader against No. 20 Georgia Tech on Wednesday, beginning at 5 p.m.
