LA JOLLA, Calif. - Select members of the San Diego State men's tennis team participated in the Pacific Coast Doubles Championships at the La Jolla Beach and Tennis Club on Friday. The three-day event is a best-of-three set doubles tournament that features some of the top doubles talent in the nation.
On day one of the 118th championships, all three San Diego State teams advanced past the round of 64. The duo of Anthony Gomez and Juan Gomez got past the duo of Hooney Shin/Efe Ustundag, 6-3, 7-6(4), while Robert Sabo and Billy Timu cruised to a 6-3, 6-3 victory over David Johnson/Aba Omodele-Lucien.
In the round of 32, both teams were not as successful as Gomez/Gomez fell to the fifth-seeded tandem of former USC standout Drew Hoskins and current Trojan freshman Abdullah Magdas, 6-3, 6-4, and Sabo/Timu dropped a 6-2, 6-3, decision to Blake Muller and David Hodge.
In other matches, current freshman Achim Ceban teamed with former SDSU star and 2006 doubles All-American Benedikt Stronk to go 2-0 for the day. The pair disposed of Frank J. Grannis/Jamie Smith of San Diego, Calif., 6-2, 6-4, and went on to defeat the Southern California team of Whit Livingston/Gary Sacks in three sets.
Redshirt freshman Michael Beron also competed in the tournament and was paired with La Jolla Beach and Tennis Club standout Bill Kellogg due to Berom's original partner from Fresno State coming down with an illness. The two ended up facing the top seed in former Aztec Ryan Redondo and current USC coach Peter Smith and were downed in straight sets, 6-2, 6-4, in the opening round.
San Diego State will continue play tomorrow, Saturday, March 3, at the La Jolla Beach and Tennis Club.
