SAN DIEGO - Junior pitcher Christina Ross (Santa Clarita, Calif.) threw a one-hitter to give the San Diego State softball team a 5-0 victory over Miami (Oh.) and its second win of the day at the Aztec Classic at SDSU Softball Stadium on Sunday. The Aztecs (19-11), who earlier in the day rallied to defeat Iona, 9-4, have won six straight games.

In the nightcap, Ross (12-5) tossed 5 2/3 hitless innings before surrendering a single to center by the Red Hawks' (8-19) Breanna Robinson. She struck out an SDSU career-high 12 batters and walked four over seven innings.

Sophomore Monica Alnes (Rancho Palos Verdes, Calif.) went 2-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored to lead the Aztec offense, while sophomore Kasey Mytinger (San Diego/West Hills HS) hit her first homer of the season in the fifth. Junior Taryin Casillas (San Diego/Grossmont HS) added an RBI single and scored a run.

In the earlier game, SDSU rallied from a 4-2 deficit in the fifth with seven runs over the final two innings en route to a 9-4 triumph over Iona (4-5).

Senior Christy Hollingshead (San Jose, Calif.) hit a pinch-hit single in the sixth to score freshman Stefanie Quichocho-Rosario (San Diego/Morse HS) from third to tie the game at 4-4. Alnes gave the Aztecs the lead for good in the seventh when she laced a two-run double to left-center field to plate junior Tamani Wells (Concord, Calif.) and Casillas with the game-winning runs.

SDSU, which had a season-high 16 hits in the game, was led offensively by freshman Brittany Knudsen (San Diego/Escondido HS) (3-for-5, home run) and Wells (3-for-4, run). Alnes was 2-for-4 with two RBI and two runs scored, while Casillas (2-for-4, two runs) and Mytinger (2-for-4, run, RBI) had two hits apiece.

Sophomore Melissa Owens (San Diego/Christian HS) (7-6) allowed two runs (one earned) on six hits over six innings of relief to pick up the win for the Aztecs. She struck out nine without issuing a walk. Alnes allowed two runs on two hits in the first inning.

San Diego State plays host to No. 18/22 Georgia Tech in a doubleheader on Wednesday beginning at 5 p.m.
