Sophomore Melissa Owens (San Diego/Christian HS) hit a two-run home run and three others had two hits apiece to lead the San Diego State softball team to a 7-2 victory over Fairfield at the Aztec Classic at SDSU Softball Stadium on Saturday. The win was the fourth in a row for SDSU, which improved to 17-11 on the season. The Stags fell to 3-9.
Junior Megan McDonald (Glendale, Ariz.) gave the Aztecs the early 1-0 lead in the second when her fielder's choice bunt scored classmate Taryin Casillas (San Diego/Grossmont HS) who was breaking from third on the 2-0 pitch.
The game remained 1-0 until SDSU exploded for six combined runs in the fifth and sixth innings to open up a 7-0 lead.
With one out in the fifth, senior Amanda Beasley (San Diego/Mount Miguel HS) ripped a triple off the center field fence and scored on a wild pitch. Two batters later, junior Tamani Wells (Concord, Calif.) singled and Owens followed with a two-run homer to right-center field, her fourth home run over her last eight games. Over the eight contests, Owens is batting a team-best .481 (13-for-27) with 11 RBI and a 1.000 slugging percentage.
Sophomore Monica Alnes (Rancho Palos Verdes, Calif.) led off the sixth with a deep double to right-center field and advanced to third on a groundout by sophomore Kasey Mytinger (San Diego/West Hills HS). McDonald followed with a single through the left side of the infield and was replaced at first by freshman Stefanie Quichocho-Rosario (San Diego/Morse HS).
Quichocho-Rosario, the team leader with nine stolen bases this season, promptly stole second and third base and scored on a single by Beasley. Beasley moved to second on a wild pitch and made it 7-0 Aztecs when freshman Brittany Knudsen (San Diego/Escondido HS) singled through the right side.
Casillas, Alnes and Beasley each went 2-for-3 to lead the SDSU offense.
Junior Christina Ross (11-5) tossed 6 2/3 scoreless innings before giving up a two-out, two-run homer to Fairfield's Meghan Borst. She struck out eight in the game and walked one.
