SAN DIEGO - The San Diego State women's soccer team finished up a busy eight days that saw the team play in a spring scrimmage and participate in three community service projects.
On Friday, March 2, the team participated in Read Across America at Balboa Elementary School. The Aztecs divided up into classrooms and read to the Balboa students. The SDSU student-athletes also answered questions from the students about everything from soccer to the importance of learning.
On March 3, the Aztecs defeated Point Loma Nazarene, 3-0, in a scrimmage behind two goals by freshman Heather Vandevanter.
The following Saturday (March 10), San Diego State participated in a Feed the Homeless campaign, where each student-athlete put in $5, went to Costco and bought a bunch of food. The Aztecs then spent the day making sandwiches and putting drinks, granola bars, etc., into "to-go" containers. Following the food preparation, the team went to downtown San Diego and walked around the city handing out food to the homeless.
Also on March 10, the Aztecs attended the Tony Gwynn Classic at Petco Park, where they volunteered their services in passing out commemorative hats to fans in attendance at the entry gate to the stadium.
The team has four more community service events planned this spring, including another Feed the Homeless event.
