Aztecs in Postseason For Fourth Time in Six Seasons; Open NIT Play at MVC Member Missouri State on Wednesday
Sixth-seeded San Diego State (21-10; 10-6 Mountain West Conference) makes its second consecutive appearance in postseason play and its fourth appearance in the last six seasons on Wednesday night, when the Aztecs travel to Springfield, Mo., to face third-seeded Missouri State (22-10 overall; 12-6 Missouri Valley Conference).

Tip time is set for 9:05 p.m. CDT (7:05 p..m. PDT) and the game will be televised by ESPNU (also carried by Channel 4 San Diego). The contest can be heard up and down the West Coast on XX Sports Radio (1090-AM and 105.7-FM in San Diego).

For just the third time in 37 seasons at the Division I level, SDSU is making consecutive postseason appearances. Last year, SDSU claimed the MWC regular season championship, conference tournament title and advanced to the NCAA Tournament where the Aztecs led Indiana in the final minute before falling 87-83.

This is the eighth Division I postseason appearance (four of which have come during Steve Fisher's tenure) and the third NIT appearance in school history. San Diego State's lone Division I postseason victory came in the 2003 NIT, when the Aztecs used overtime to defeat UC Santa Barbara, 67-62. That season, SDSU was eliminated in a 57-48 second-round loss at Texas Tech. The Aztecs are 1-7 in Division I postseason tournaments and 1-2 in the NIT.

As you might imagine, head coach Steve Fisher has a had a bit more success in postseason play. The 1992 national coach of the year won an NCAA championship in 1989, advanced to the NCAA title game in 1992 and 1993 and claimed the NIT title in 1997. He is one of 12 active coaches to have won a national championship and one of only nine coaches in history to claim both NCAA and NIT titles. Fisher is 26-10 in postseason play, including a 6-2 record in the NIT.

The Aztecs' bid for a second consecutive MWC tournament championship and a second straight trip to the NCAA Tournament came to an end last Thursday in a 69-64 loss to Colorado State in the quarterfinal round. The Aztecs, who defeated the Rams twice during the regular season, overcame a 10-point first half deficit and built a 47-40 advantage with 11 minutes to play. Colorado State used a 9-2 run to tie the game at 49 and the contest was tight the rest of the way.

Tied at 62 with 2:18 to play, Colorado State scored the next seven points to secure the victory.

Senior guard Brandon Heath reached double figures for the 56th straight game and posted his 53rd career game with at least 20 points, as he tallied a team-high 20 points. Senior forward Mohamed Abukar added 14 points and five rebounds. Junior forward Jerome Habel connected on 7-of-8 attempts from the field en route to 14 points and a team-high seven rebounds. Sophomore forward Lorrenzo Wade had a career-high nine assists (most by an SDSU player this season) to go along with six points.
