SAN DIEGO - The San Diego State softball team tied its season high with 13 hits and took advantage of four Fairfield errors in an 11-4 victory at SDSU Softball Stadium Tuesday night. The Aztecs improved to 15-11 with the win, while the Stags fell to 1-5.

Sophomore Melissa Owens (San Diego/Mt. Carmel HS) went 3-for-4 with three RBI and a run to lead the SDSU hit barrage, while four others had two hits apiece. Junior Tamani Wells (Concord, Calif.) was 2-for-4 with three runs, a double and an RBI and junior Megan McDonald (Glendale, Ariz.) went 2-for-3 with two runs and an RBI. Freshman Brittany Knudsen (San Diego/Escondido HS) (2-for-4, two runs), who extended her career-long hitting streak to eight games, and sophomore Monica Alnes (Rancho Palos Verdes, Calif.) (2-for-4, RBI) also had big days at the plate for the Aztecs.

Owens tossed 4 1/3 innings to improve to 6-6 on the season. She allowed four runs (one earned) on seven hits, struck out four and walked two. Junior Christina Ross (Santa Clarita, Calif.) struck out three without giving up a hit over the final 2 2/3 innings for her first save of the season.

SDSU jumped out to a 5-2 lead in the bottom of the second when Owens laced a double to left field to score Wells and Knudsen. Fairfield came back with solo runs in the third and fifth to close within one run at 5-4. The Aztecs, however, put the game out of reach with six runs on eight hits over the final two innings for the 11-4 victory.

San Diego State plays host to the six-team Aztec Classic this weekend, its final tournament of the season. The Aztecs' first game will be against Fordham at 7 p.m. Friday.
