SAN DIEGO - San Diego State continued its recent hot play and extended its winning streak to three matches as it disposed of No. 75 Arizona, 5-2, on a warm Monday afternoon at Aztec Tennis Center. The win evens SDSU's record at 5-5 and snaps a string of three straight victories for the Wildcats as they fall to 5-7.
After losing the doubles point in four of five matches, a run in which the Aztecs dropped five straight decisions, San Diego State entered singles action with the doubles point for a third consecutive outing.
SDSU received wins from its top duo of Anthony Gomez and Achim Ceban, who won their second in a row, and at No. 3, where Markus Dickhardt and Juan Gomez extended their unbeaten streak to three. Both pairings won by identical 8-6 scores.
In singles, it was all Aztecs are they claimed victories at the top-four positions for the first time this season.
No. 67 Dickhardt continued his stellar play as he cruised to a 6-3, 6-3, decision over Claudio Christen at the top of the order for his sixth consecutive win. Meanwhile at No. 2, No. 76 Christian Groh broke a five-match losing skid by downing Bruno Alcala in straight sets.
The SDSU victories at Nos. 3-4 were much like the first two as Anthony Gomez took care of Ravid Hezi, 6-2, 7-5, and Juan Gomez emerged victorious over Peter Zimmer, 7-5, 7-5.
Next up for San Diego State is a date with 11th-ranked North Carolina. The match is set for noon on Saturday, March 17, at Aztec Tennis Center.
