RANCHO CORDOVA, Calif - The San Diego State rowing team picked up a pair of wins and came within a second in two other races in a dual meet with Sacramento State at Lake Natoma in Rancho Cordova, Calif., on Sunday morning. Both of the Aztec wins came in Novice races.
SDSU's Novice Eight boat, consisting of Lauren Norton (cox), Katie Rusch (stroke), Mary Anne Hinman (seven), Anna Ohrstrom (six) Kristina Giacalone (five), Jessica Teora (four), Tamineh Moyer (three), Jill Crowley (two) and Randi Riggs (bow), finished the course in 7 minutes, 8 seconds, five seconds ahead of the Hornets' (7:13) boat.
The Aztecs' Novice Four "A" boat won by the largest margin of the day, completing the course in 8:14, well ahead of Sacramento State's boat (8:31). SDSU's "B" boat was third in 8:41. In the Novice Boat for the Aztecs was Lauren Lee (cox), Kelsey Streeter (stroke), Kelly West (three), Lindsey Butcher (two) and Allison Nance (bow).
"It was a great day for our novice boats today," head coach Jennifer Zebroski said. "Overall, we were much better than yesterday. Our rhythm and stroke was more efficient."
SDSU's Junior Varsity Eight was nipped at the line by Sacramento State in what would be the closest race of the day. The Hornets' time of 6:51.65 narrowly beat the Aztecs' 6:51.70.
Another close race saw Sacramento State's Varsity Four boat beat the Aztecs' boat, 7:51.7 to 7:57.5.
In Varsity Eight action, SDSU's time of 6:53.3 was less than six seconds behind the Hornets' time of 6:47.7.
The Aztecs travel to Marina Del Rey, Calif., this weekend to compete in a dual meet with UCLA.
