PORT OF SACRAMENTO, Calif. - The Second Novice Eight boat took first in its respective race to lead the San Diego State rowers in a dual meet against UC Davis Saturday morning at Port of Sacramento, Calif.
In the Second Novice Eight race, the Aztecs' boat, consisting of Laura Norton (cox), Kelsey Streeter (stroke), Courtney Caldwell (seven), Lauren Shetterly (six), Kelly West (five), Melissa Carey (four), Jean-Marie Garayburu (three), Lindsay Butcher (two) and Allison Nance (bow), battled back and forth with UC Davis throughout the course until the finish line, narrowly winning in 7 minutes, 24.20 seconds, 0.76 seconds ahead of UC Davis (7:24.96).
"(The Second Novice Eight) race was an exciting race to watch," head coach Jennifer Zebroski said. "Both teams were battling the whole way down the course and it was a great win for us."
The Junior Varsity Eight race was also close until the 1,500-meter mark when UC Davis made a big move and held on over the final 500 meters to win by less than five seconds (6:55.50 to SDSU's 7:00.41).
In other races, the Aztecs finished second in the Varsity Eight (6:49.55 to 7:02.60), Novice Eight (7:10.03 to 7:13.08) and Varsity Four races (7:45.86 to 7:57.11).
The Aztecs will be back in the water tomorrow (Sunday) morning when they face Sacramento State at Lake Natoma in Rancho Cordova, Calif. The Varsity Four race is set to begin at 8 a.m., followed by the Varsity Eights (8:30 a.m.), Novice Eights (9 a.m.) and the Junior Varsity Eights (9:30 a.m.).
