ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. - San Diego State finds itself in third place through five events with 21 team points after day one of the inaugural TCR Race Productions Invitational at the Albuquerque Convention Center Friday evening. Three Aztecs set personal records, while four performances were among the school's all-time best.
Sophomore Karoline Koehler, competing in her first meet at San Diego State, posted the second-best all-time effort in the long jump recording a leap of 19 feet, 8.75 inches, good for fourth place. Classmate Shana Watson also turned in a solid performance jumping 18-10.75 in the same event placing her third in school history and sixth out of 26 competitors.
In the pole vault, SDSU had two athletes establish personal bests. Junior Monica Pacas had the top showing among all Aztecs finishing with a career best vault of 12-8.75. The Atascadero, Calif., native's performance was the fourth-best at the meet (4th at SDSU), just ahead of Dana Van Wagner.
Van Wagner wound up clearing 12-4.75, which eclipsed her effort at the National Pole Vault Summit earlier this season and set a new personal best in the process. The senior finished in seventh place and entered the SDSU record book at the same position.
Sophomore Dana Jensen became the third vaulter to set a new personal standard as she vaulted 12-0.75 (9th all-time at SDSU), while freshman Stephanie Bagan cleared the same height.
The last of the Aztecs to compete on the first day were sophomore Kristin Olafsdottir and senior Kristin Karhio in the high jump. Olafsdottir, the 2006 Mountain West Conference's outdoor freshman of the year, came in eighth (5-3.00), while Karhio finished in 10th place with an identical season-best jump.
San Diego State resumes action final day action at the TCR Race Productions Invitational Saturday, Feb. 10, at 10 a.m. MST.
