No. 10 Cal 6, San Diego State 1

SAN DIEGO - The San Diego State softball team dropped a pair of games Friday night in the second day of the Campbell-Cartier Classic. The Aztecs (1-2) fell to UC Santa Barbara in the first game, 1-0, in eight innings and then dropped a 6-1 decision to No. 10 California in the nightcap.

SDSU hit the ball hard all night, but failed to capitalize on a host of opportunities. San Diego State left 16 runners on base over the two games and committed an uncharacteristic eight errors which led to five of its opponents' seven runs.

In the first game, a 1-0 loss to the Gauchos (2-1) in eight innings, sophomore pitcher Melissa Owens (San Diego) (0-1) had a career night, striking out a career-high nine batters over 7 2/3 innings in the loss. She allowed five hits, three walks and one unearned run.

Her effort wasn't enough as SDSU left 10 runners on base, including two or more in an inning three times.

Sophomores Erin Floros (San Diego) and Kasey Mytinger (San Diego) each went 2-for-3 to lead the Aztec offense, while Owens and junior Tamani Wells (Concord, Calif.) each added solo singles.

In the nightcap, SDSU committed three errors in the first inning and the Golden Bears (2-0) jumped out to a 3-0 lead and never looked back en route to the 6-1 triumph. The Aztecs would finish the game with six errors as only two of Cal's six runs were earned.

Junior Christina Ross (Santa Clarita, Calif.) (1-1) scattered four hits over four strong innings to take the loss. She struck out three, walked two and gave up four unearned runs. Sophomore Monica Alnes (Rancho Palos Verdes, Calif.) pitched the final three frames in relief and allowed two runs on four hits.

Floros homered to deep left in the sixth for SDSU's only run of the day. Five other Aztecs - Owens, Wells, junior Megan McDonald (Glendale, Ariz.), junior Taryin Casillas (San Diego) and senior Amanda Beasley (San Diego) - each contributed a single apiece.

SDSU continues its play in the Campbell-Cartier Classic with games against Kansas (2 p.m.) and No. 23 UMass (4:30 p.m.) on Saturday.
